Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu has bitten the bullet and sacked under-fire director of football Andoni Zubizarreta, a move that had been speculated about for some time.
The news was announced via a statement on the club's website, in which Bartomeu thanked Zubizarreta for his hard work and professionalism over the last four years.
Zubizarreta, a former Camp Nou hero from his time as the club's first-choice goalkeeper between 1986 and 1994, rejoined the 'Azulgranas' as the director of football in July 2010. However, his popularity was hit by his patchy record in the transfer market, and the recent transfer ban handed to Barcelona by FIFA - and his own reaction to it - may well have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
