Take several deep breaths before you listen to MisterWives rendition of “Money On My Mind.”
We’ve been freaking out over MisterWives for a minute around here. The Jackson Five-esque, disco-pop beat on their debut EP, Reflections, had us ready to crown them the next golden children of pop.So, imagine our delight when we heard the band’s cover of “Money On My Mind,” which was originally performed by Sam Smith, another artist we’ve had a completely healthy, functional, and in no way obsessive relationship with this year — why do you ask?
MisterWives’ cover doesn’t stray too far from the Woodies performer’s original, although they dial back the percussive energy and inject more organic-sounding rhythmic elements. Still, lead singer Mandy Lee more than holds her own against Smith’s broad vocal range — not an easy thing to do.
What really sells MisterWives’ cover for us, however, is the little detour they take near the end of the song, mashing up a few lines of The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money, Mo Problems.” Pardon us while we hook ourselves up to an oxygen tank…
